PSYCHOTHERAPY

I am trained and experienced in various forms of psychotherapy including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT). As a physician and psychiatrist my services are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). If you are interested in these services please use this referral form.

Independent medical and psychiatric evaluations can be very helpful for lawyers, litigants and organizations when mental health issues arise. I provide such evaluations in various areas including:

I have been a speaker and master of ceremonies for hospitals, universities, professional groups, conferences, and community groups. I have been interviewed by the CBC and the Toronto Star on mental health, human rights, and legal topics. In addition to my legal and psychiatric training, I am a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada. This provides me with the ability to create content that is engaging, entertaining, and educational. Speaking topics include:

  • social and political aspects of mental health and criminal law policy

  • refugee and immigrant mental health


Legal advice and representation

I have experience in criminal law, mental health law, labour and employment law, human rights law, and disability law. As a law student I received awards for advocacy skills and was valedictorian of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. 

BIO 

Dr. Lwam Ghebrehariat JD MD FRCPC is a psychiatrist and lawyer in Toronto. He is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada (Acting, 2003), the University of Alberta (BA Hons First Class, Philosophy, 2007), the University of Toronto Faculty of Law (JD, 2011), McMaster University medical school (MD, 2017). He is licensed to practice law in the provinces of Ontario and Alberta. He completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Toronto and is certified by the College of Physicians of Ontario and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as a specialist in psychiatry. As a student he received awards for his advocacy skills and was elected valedictorian of both his law school and medical school. As a psychiatrist he has been awarded by colleagues in various professions for his collaborative skills. He has received national recognition and positive reviews for theatrical and comedy performances.

As a law student and lawyer, Dr. Lwam Ghebrehariat has focused on social justice issues. He focused on serving the public in legal aid clinics as a law student, and he completed his articles at a prominent union-side labour law firm. He also practised as a criminal lawyer.

As a lawyer and psychiatrist, Dr. Lwam Ghebrehariat has extensive experience working with clients experiencing mental health and addiction issues. He has a keen insight into the broad factors which influence mental health and well-being. He has experience in providing psychiatric care, legal representation, psycho-legal assessments involving the complex intersection of law, medicine, and mental health. He brings a unique combination of skills and training to his work.

Dr. Lwam Ghebrehariat enjoys running with his dog and performing in the theatre and comedy community. He is conversant in French, Tigrinya, and Spanish.
